STEPPING UP TOGETHER
MISSION OVERVIEW
The youth are also burdened by a mental health crisis, with over 40% reporting symptoms of depression and anxiety, leading to deteriorating academic performance and increased school dropout rates. Compounded by rising youth violence and incarceration rates, Louisiana's young people are at a higher risk of becoming involved in the criminal justice system, further exacerbating their challenges.
The Aligned Foundation, founded by physician Dr. Nikhil Sharma, is committed to addressing the significant disparities impacting Louisiana's youth, particularly in New Orleans. The foundation's mission is to advance health equity and improve the overall well-being of children across the state, recognizing that young people today face numerous challenges.
In Louisiana, nearly 23% of children live in food deserts, areas with limited access to nutritious food, contributing to poor physical and mental health outcomes.

VISION OVERVIEW
The 2024 Step-Up 5K Run and Walk is more than just a race it's a heartfelt mission to transform the lives of New Orleans' youth by equipping them with the tools they need to thrive in the face of life's challenges. In a city where many children are confronted daily with violence, educational gaps and mental health struggles, we are stepping up to offer them something truly powerful: the chance to develop a mindset that empowers them to face adversity with resilience and strength.
Proceeds from this race will directly fund essential programs, such as our mindfulness project at inner city schools, where students will be taught the power of gratitude, meditation, and empowerment. Imagine the profound impact of children learning these life-changing skills at a young age, enabling them to navigate life's challenges with calm and confidence. In addition, your support will also help sustain after-school programs through our partner Youth Run Nola, benefiting over 15 schools across the city. These programs provide a safe and supportive environment for students to grow physically, mentally, and emotionally, fostering a community where every child has the opportunity to succeed.

OUR SPONSORS
Stepping Up is a DEPENDABILITY
We’re calling on the entire city of New Orleans to stand by our youth, to be there when it counts, and to show up when they need us most. This isn’t about accolades or glory — it’s about being a lifeline for those who need it, especially when times are tough.
Stepping Up is a MINDSET
It’s about aiming to make a difference and embracing the idea that nothing is impossible. It means asking the tough questions, believing in the cause, and understanding that no effort is too small when it comes to changing lives.
Stepping Up is a ACTION
It’s not just about having a conversation; it’s about getting out there and doing the hard work. It’s about recognizing the gaps and stepping in to fill them. Whether you're running, volunteering, or sponsoring, every step you take will ripple into lasting change.
Our Youth Need Us Now More Than Ever:
The future of New Orleans depends on how we invest in our young people today. Many of them are growing up in environments where it’s hard to find authentic role models, and without the right support, they may struggle to see their own potential. This is where we step in.
When speaking with one of the founders of the race, Dr. Nikhil Sharma stated:
“Through events like the Step-Up 5K, we aim to connect with our youth, showing them that the city believes in them and that together, we can make a difference!”
